Casio NL-01 [593] NFL Pittsburgh Steelers
In honor of Super Bowl® XLIII (that's 43, folks), here is a watch that some fans would die for.
The Pittsburgh Steelers™ Casio watch, model NL-01, module 593.
The best part about this is that I won this watch on eBay™ just a few days ago for only $3.99!! It is so delightfully coincidental and magnificently timely. Fortuitous. Lucky. ... Ah there aren't enough adjectives to go around. I guess nobody else wanted it, which was surprising since there are SO MANY die hard Steelers™ fans out there. I suppose none of them wear Casio watches? Or its too dorky to wear your team's watch? Well whatever the reason, I got it for $3.99. =D I thought SOMEBODY would outbid me, but nobody did. Maybe they ran out of money after prepping for the big party on Sunday.
Now the 593 module is not that special. Casio has been producing these in mass quantities for years, and it saw use in many different models. My A159W, for example, uses the same module. And it's currently used in their cheapest watch, the ubiquitous F-91W. So, what makes this watch special is not the module, but the prominently displayed Pittsburgh Steelers™ name and logo.
The watch has basic functions like time, calendar, alarm and stopwatch, topped off with a very nice green light. Just the basics, nothing else; so in terms of functions, there is very little to talk about. Of course, these functions would have cost $100+ in the 70's, so the 593 module is a testament to the advances in watch technology since those early LCD watches. As of this writing, a brand new F-91W's MSRP is only $18.95! What a bargain.
If you look at the side profile closely, you can see that the watch uses the low-cost pin-based band attachment rather than the more common spring-bar band attachment.
After playing with the watch for a while, you may notice that the only thing that makes this watch a Steelers watch is the watch band. Take away the band, and you are just left with a watch with black and yellow color scheme. I'm sure there are other teams with black and yellow color schemes out there, and I bet this was an intentional move by Casio so that they can mass produce team-themed watches with minimal variation in their parts.
The caseback reveals the model number, NL-01. As I alluded to in the paragraph above, I believe Casio made an NL-01 for all of the NFL teams. This is the only NL-01 that I own, so I am not 100% sure about that. I did see another NL-01 on eBay a long time ago, and it had a red trim instead of the yellow one on mine. Maybe that was an Arizona Cardinals watch. I donno, that one was pretty beat up. ;)
Now, the only thing missing from this entry is a real Steeler's fan. Unfortunately I am not a Steelers fan, but I'm not an anti-fan either. I just don't follow NFL that much, but I do plan to watch the game on Sunday with a bunch of friends. The game better be good!
I'll finish this post with some "glamor" shots of this fun NFL watch.
"Super Bowl" is a registered trademark of the NFL. "NFL" is probably a trademark of the NFL too.

» Hi, I'm an ebay seller and you're right. Casio made a NL-01 watch for every NFL team. It happens that I've got some of them like GIANTS, BRONCOS, LIONS and CHIEFS. Did you know CASIO also produced NL-02, that's the the dual time watch with NFL teams. I also have some of them like 49ers, RAIDERS and BEARS. I've got some cool models of VINTAGE CASIOS.
